Mary Ann Lanier performs operas, oratorios, recitals, improvised music, and she has a passion for singing American music. The Boston Globe wrote of her, “Lanier’s soprano soars and she boasts excellent diction.” A versatile artist, Lanier’s credits range from movie soundtrack recordings to a showcase at the pop/rock music industry festival, South by Southwest (Austin, TX) to singing Zarzuela (Spanish opera) roles with the Jarvis Zarzuela Festival (Napa, CA). She has sung with Opera Aperta, Masterworks Chorale, Fine Arts Chorale, Raylynmor Opera, Opera to Go, New Opera Theater Ensemble, Boston Vocal Artists, Cape Cod Chorale and the MIT Wind Ensemble. A founding member of American Classics, Mary Ann earned the Bachelor of Music degree at Oberlin College and the Master of Music degree at Boston University. Lanier performed throughout New England as a founding member of the American song duo, The Camptown Ladies. She served as principal soprano and co-director of the touring opera education ensemble, Opera to Go. Mary Ann has served on the music faculties of Wellesley College,Tufts University, and MIT. Lanier has been heard on WGBH radio, WERS radio, the Lifetime and Learning Channels on television, and on WGBH television. Her solo compact disc recording is entitled You’d Be Surprised: Ragtime, Waltz & Novelty Songs, 1891-1919. In addition to her busy performing schedule, Lanier teaches voice at New England Conservatory Preparatory Division, Groton School in Groton, MA, and at her home atop Prospect Hill in Somerville, MA. She joined the music faculty of Bridgewater State College in September 2007.
